Twins Silver Dream
Have you ever dreamed of owning your own business? Better yet, doing what you absolutely love – and making it your career? Well, a little over a year ago that dream became a reality for Howard County identical twin sisters, Patti Sapp and Susan Lavin.
As the home-based business industry hits an all time high it seems nearly impossible to choose a product or company that allows the freedom and flexibility that complete ownership affords. We’ve all been invited to home parties, sat through lengthy demonstrations, listened to the history lesson and even heard the many reasons why you should “join the team”. In most of these cases the company wanted you to do much more than simply buy their products. The twins felt more creativity was in order.
How it all started…
Susan and Patti have always given each other gifts on a spontaneous basis. They truly enjoy surprising each other because it's meaningful and unexpected. Aside from sharing a closely marked DNA, they also share a passion for beautifully handcrafted gifts, especially jewelry. For many years the twins seem to gravitate towards artisan created sterling silver as surprise presents for one another.
Last spring, just over a year ago, they made a major decision to turn this pastime into something more. It was then that Twins Silver Dream was born. “It was one of those life changing moments that still makes us laugh.” says Patti. Susan and Patti wanted to build a local business that stood out among the typical home-party companies. And that is just what they did!
Building the Business...
“Once the decision was made to develop our own real company, we did lots of research and took the official steps to become Twins Silver Dream, LLC.” explains Patti. “It definitely required hours of reading and research on entrepreneurial enterprises and a substantial financial commitment.” adds Susan. ‘’And plenty of time consulting with Mike Sapp, Patti’s husband, who has graciously agreed to be our accountant.”
The amazing part of this adventure is that they always agree on every aspect, from the artists they purchase the jewelry from, to their website, right down to details like the organza gift bags used to package customers’ purchases. They often wonder if other business partners agree so readily, forgive occasional errors without hesitation and find such joy in working together. “We cherish our time together, both as sisters and business owners.”
The Joy of Selling...
The first few Twins Silver Dream sales events were at the homes of local friends and family. The reactions, enthusiasm and sales were so far above what they anticipated; they knew they were on to something special. Susan and Patti decided that from the start, there would be no sales pressure, only instant gratification for customers, in a totally relaxed atmosphere at the jewelry events. They encourage guests to ask questions, but purposely avoid any kind of formal speaking presentation. They bring the jewelry to you! Guests can expect a fabulous display of over a thousand pieces of unique jewelry, all available for purchase. It’s a wonderful shopping experience.Amanda, local customer states, "The jewelry is a stunning mix of unique and modern pieces. Truly something for everyone on your list!"
The twins have literally searched the world over for amazing high quality sterling and genuine gemstone jewelry handcrafted by talented jewelry artisans. Hostesses and guests appreciate being able to shop in a casual atmosphere with no pressure and instant gratification. Jewelry purchases are taken home the day of purchase. When a customer is undecided, Susan and Patti simply ask a few key questions to get an idea of their tastes and guide them toward pieces that suit their needs. “That’s where the real joy is; our events are a celebration of laughter and the love of sterling and gemstones. There’s never a dull moment.” boasts Patti. “You rarely see such a girls night out feeling and fun at a department store!”
After about six months, Twins Silver Dream expanded by adding a website they designed themselves, with the patient technical support of Paul, Susan’s husband. Customers enjoy being able to browse and shop whenever it’s convenient for them. The web store features an amazing selection of gleaming sterling silver and colorful genuine gemstones, all such unique pieces! There is no need for fancy marketing tactics, because the jewelry is so beautiful. Customers almost always find a gemstone or design that is perfect for them or a special gift. Susan and Patti are so enthusiastic about the products they sell; it’s easy to see why success is coming into clear view for the twins.
Giving Back to the Community...
Knowing that the local community is a big part of their success, Susan and Patti believe in giving back by making contributions to worthwhile causes. Twins Silver Dream has participated in several charity events including donating jewelry for the Bastille Day fundraiser at the Elkridge Furnace Inn, benefiting the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Center. Other charities they’ve worked for include the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Tom Fox Memorial College Fund, Tay-Sachs research, and Habitat for Humanity. In October, they will help the Elkridge Love Mission and Food Pantry with an upcoming fundraiser, which will benefit the Mission’s Thanksgiving Feast for needy families. This event is scheduled for October, with more information to come in the next issue of Howard County Living.
After a year in business, the twins are still learning, still challenging themselves, and still having fun. As they check their inventory, review their budgets and monitor their profits, a day doesn’t go by without counting their blessings as well.
